Phew! If January was a quiet month, then February more than makes up for it, with Bookarazzi members launching books left, right and ... well, here. Sally Hinchcliffe's psychological thriller Out of a Clear Sky comes out in mass-market paperback on February 6th. Sally will be signing copies and meeting customers at her local Waterstones in Dumfries on Valentine's day, from 11am. It is also available on Amazon and all good bookshops. Out of a Clear Sky was an acclaimed Book at Bedtime on Radio 4 and May's book of the month on Radio 5 Live. More details here Brian Clegg's new book Ecologic is available from 30 January. No one wants to destroy the world. So why are we so good at messing it up? Ecologic uncovers the truth and lies in the green world where greenwash is rife and we are all susceptible to eco-bogeymen. See http://www.brianclegg.net/ecologic.html for more details or check out on Amazon at http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/190581125X/491. Brian will be giving a talk based on the book on 6 February at 7pm in the Roland Levinsky Building, Jill Craigie Cinema, University of Plymouth. This free event also features a panel discussion with three local MPs - Colin Breed, Linda Gilroy and Gary Streeter. Brian will also be signing copies of his book at the Waterstones Bookshop in the Sceince Museum, London at 3pm Saturday 14th February. "This book crackles. Every paragraph pits your heart against your head. Those with green sensibilities and a nervous disposition may have a cardiac arrest. But the rest of us will have our synapses set alight... A cracking read for anyone who cares about both their environmental footprint and their sanity in a world being flooded with greenwash and gobbledegook." BBC Focus Magazine Tania Hershman will be taking part in the launch of World Jewish Relief's first charity short story anthology, Sea of Azov, at Jewish Book Week on Feb 22nd 2009 at 12.30. To book tickets and for more information visit JewishBookWeek.com Emma Darwin will be reading from her new novel A Secret Alchemy and discussing her work, as a guest of the University Writers' Group, University of Surrey. Tuesday 10th February, at 6pm in the English Department. For more information go to http://www.surrey.ac.uk/english/creativ ... events.htm
Alan Sharp's new book A Grim Almanac of Edinburgh and the Lothians is published this month by The History Press. Seldom in history has there been a city with a more sordid reputation than Edinburgh. Beneath the surface respectability of the jewel in the Scottish crown lies a warren of filth-ridden alleys and stairs where thieves, murderers and ghouls of every description planned and carried out their foul deeds. In this book we meet them all. Major Weir, the devil-worshipping black magician and his wicked sister Grizel; Captain Porteous, the corrupt official who inspired the population to mob justice; Jessie King, the notorious Stockbridge baby farmer; wife poisoner Eugene Chantrelle; Deacon Brodie, the inspiration behind Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde; and of course, worst of all, Mr Burke and Mr Hare, who plied their swift trade in corpses for the dissection table of Dr Knox. Available from all good bookshops and websites - Amazon link here
Sue Mongredien has two new books out this month - Oliver Moon and the Troll Trouble, and Oliver Moon's Monster Mystery. In 'Troll Trouble', Oliver is desperate to be cast in the school play... but is gutted when he's given the part of the horrible smelly troll. But then, when a real troll pays an unexpected visit to Magic School, Oliver has the chance to be a hero after all. In 'Monster Mystery', it's the Magic School fair, and Oliver's hoping to win the star raffle prize - tickets to see the Cacklewick Lightnings, his favourite wizardball team. Unfortunately he wins a painting of the most hideous monster he's ever seen... and once it's up on the wall at home, some very strange things start to happen... Both books are available on Amazon: http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_ss_w_h ... liver+moon or you can find out more on the fabulous Oliver Moon website here: http://www.olivermoon.co.uk
